So you want to learn tracking?

Here are some things to know about Amiga tracking (Protracker clone / Protracker on Amiga / MPT / Milky)

Protracker clone limitations:

  • Samples cannot go over 64k, or 9FF in the sample offset in Sampler GUI. If over 64k, the sample will cut off. However, there is a way to bypass it by changing the protracker.ini values for 64KLIMIT.
  • Everything else as the real Protracker on Amiga, as the PT clone is supposed to be a port of Protracker to Windows, but with the author (8bitbubsy)'s tweaks added to it.
  • The PT clone supports .WAV formats for samples. It also can render the entire MOD file that you've made to a specific directory using the MOD2WAV button located at the top right corner of the GUI.
  • One thing worth mentioning is that many variations of Protracker and module format(s) allow maximum sample length of 128K, and you just cannot access the upper 64K of such a sample with sampleoffset.

Protracker on Amiga limitations:

If you are using the real thing (Amiga), I recommend using PT2.3F by 8bitbubsy.

  • For the Amiga, you can only use IFF, RAW, or PAK. If you try to use WAV, it will sound distorted and weird. Hence the file extensions listed earlier.
  • (WinUAE only) If you want to save/open a MOD, here's a tip. Press F12 to go into settings, then navigate your way into into "CD & Hard drives", then press "Add Directory or Archive...", then make the device name "DH0-DHx (x=number you want to save it as)" depending on how many hard disks you have, and name your volume label whatever you want to name it. Then, go into PT and type in the name of your device (DHx). Now, you can access your hard disk, and save/open your MOD files.
  • If you have no samples, you can do the same as last time. Just make a seperate folder into the hard disk though. If you're wanting to make a sample that has multiple sounds, you can use another tool called MOD2SMP to create your own SUPER-POWER-MEGA-TECHNO-DRUM-SECTION, all into one neat IFF sample.

Milky limitations:

  • Everything for MilkyTracker is almost exactly the same to the PT limitations.

Q&A

"Why are none of my samples in tune??"

Try reading this document and see if it will help. Or, use the "Finetune" buttons.

Now, we are ready to go through making the tune!
